The California Retired County Employees Association (CRCEA) is a nonprofit that represents 20 California retired county employee associations. CRCEA provides a forum for educating members and promoting retiree benefits and issues. To further that mission, leadership from these associations meet at semi-annual conferences. The conferences are structured to review information relevant to legislation, the state of health care, senior safety, and other issues of importance to retirees.
RESDC is proud to have hosted the CRCEA 2019 Spring Conference, which marked the 50th anniversary of CRCEA. The conference was held April 14-17, 2019 (opening session on Monday, April 15) at the Doubletree Hotel Circle in central San Diego. Thank you to everyone who attended and to all our sponsors, speakers, volunteers, and everyone else who made this event possible.

Things to Do
San Diego is home to beautiful coastline, world-class attractions, a sophisticated arts and culture scene, and thriving diverse neighborhoods each with their own flavor. Here are just a few activities to consider during your stay.
- Balboa Park is a magnificent cultural oasis that includes 17 museums, tranquil gardens and the world-famous San Diego Zoo. At 1,200 acres, Balboa Park is the largest urban cultural park in North America and a must see on any visit to San Diego. Located just blocks from downtown San Diego hotels, the park has a rich history reflected through stunning architecture, art installations, and cultural events throughout the year.
- Beaches: La Jolla is the “Jewel of San Diego” and is a great place to take in incredible views of the ocean, a seal colony at Scripps Park, the Birch Aquarium at Scripps Institute of Oceanography, or an oceanview hike at Torrey Pines State Park. La Jolla is also an excellent place to shop for souvenirs and enjoy lunch with offerings from casual to fine dining. Or visit North County’s Del Mar or Solana Beach for a quaint seaside village experience with fine dining and shops. Coronado, which is across the bay from downtown, has a charming main street lined with restaurants, shops, galleries, and more. For a more casual beach experience, head toward the Mission Bay area and take a walk along the boardwalk at Pacific Beach, or head over to Ocean Beach for quirky antique and vintage stores, and then catch gorgeous views of the sunset at Sunset Cliffs.
- Old Town Trolley Tours is a hop-on hop-off tour that has been taking visitors throughout the city for over 25 years, exploring Old Town, Gaslamp Quarter, Embarcadero, Balboa Park, Coronado, and more. Stay on the trolley for the full two-hour tour and learn fun and interesting facts about San Diego, or get off at any one of the 10 stops and strike out on your own. When ready to head to the next location, just return to the stop and a trolley will swing by and pick you up. There are also plenty of other options to tour the city, including walking and bike tours, segway tours, harbor tours, kayak tours, and more.
- San Diego Seal Tours offer an exciting 90-minute narrated experience on amphibious vehicles – guided by seasoned captains – that travel through the scenic streets before diving into the cool waters of the San Diego Harbor. Tours depart from Seaport Village and Embarcadero in downtown San Diego.
- Shopping: Fashion Valley is a very popular two-level, open-air retail complex, with major department stores and over 200 shops and restaurants accommodating every budget, style and taste. It’s only a quick drive, bus ride (Route 88 every day except Sunday), or medium walk (~1.3 mi) away from the hotel. Just a few miles east, the Westfield Mission Valley outdoor mall is perfect for all of life’s necessities. Another great option is Horton Plaza, a five-level staggered open-air mall in downtown San Diego. Or head just north of downtown to the neighborhood of Little Italy, which has blocks of great restaurants, galleries, brew pubs and boutique shopping; if you’re here on a Saturday, Little Italy also boasts a fantastic Farmer’s Market 8am – 2pm.
- Breweries: The craft beer scene is massive in San Diego, with more than 150 breweries, countless beer bars, and tasting rooms across the county. Local pioneers like Karl Strauss Brewing, Stone Brewing Co., Ballast Point, Coronado Brewing, AleSmith and Pizza Port lead the charge, but there are plenty more top-notch locations to visit. Check out the San Diego Brewery Guide to find the perfect spot.
- Wineries: There are more than 115 wineries in San Diego County, most of which are small, family-owned operations. Bernardo Winery is the oldest winery in Southern California and is an excellent choice for a visit. In addition to a tasting room that’s open daily, guests can also enjoy the atmosphere of the original buildings and winemaking equipment, the vineyards, gardens, and winery village with a variety of unique shops and art galleries, cafe, coffee roaster and coffee shop.
- Liberty Station is a former Naval Training Station in the Point Loma area that has been converted into a 361-acre waterfront urban village with a curated mix of artisans, makers and galleries, locally-based shops, restaurants, family-friendly entertainment, cultural activities and acres of public parks and open gardens. It’s a great place to spend a day or to just drop in for a bite at one of the many restaurants (plus there’s ample free parking – a rarity in San Diego).
- Downtown: The Gaslamp Quarter is a historic entertainment district with rich Victorian architecture and boutique shops, dining, and a vibrant nightlife. Seaport Village, awash in coastal breezes and views of Coronado Bridge, offers eclectic gifts and souvenirs with four miles of meandering cobblestone pathways and a quarter-mile slate boardwalk along the San Diego Bay. Architecturally magnificent Petco Park, home of the San Diego Padres, is situated in the heart of downtown San Diego.
- Get Active: With moderate temperatures year-round, San Diego is home to a wide range of outdoor activities. Learn how to surf or stand-up paddle board, go for a kayak tour, play golf at one of the many courses, take a hike along the coast or an inland trail, or try paragliding, hang gliding, or indoor skydiving.
