NBC 7/39 reported that “identity theft experts and elections officials are on guard for a new type of cybersecurity threat - one that stands not just to rob you of your personal information, but undermine your faith in the election.” The scammers create texts and emails that look similar to the official ones that are available – California BallotTrax (Track My Ballot), the Registrar of Voters, and the US Postal Service, for example. The messages often are asking questions, offering a survey or other attempts to gain your personal information or to just discredit the voting process. Be sure to check the sender and ensure that the email address or texting number are legitimate. The text messages should all come from the same number. Michael Vu, Registrar of Voters offers other solutions: “… ‘Michael Vu with the Registrar of Voters said there are two simpler tells: 1. The elections office will NEVER text you with details about who you vote for – that information is private and even the folks at the Registrar of Voters don’t know how you vote 2. It’s illegal to offer any incentives for voting at all, especially for a particular candidate, so if you get a text offering you a prize, you know it’s definitely a scam. Give our office a call at (858) 565-5800 and we will let you know if it is sanctioned by us or if it is not sanctioned by us,’ said Vu. …” For the full article and video, please visit the NBC 7/39 website – https://www.nbcsandiego.com/news/local/scammers-are-mimicking-ballot-tracking-text-service/2421308/ |
